About Us

Round Table Logo Exmouth & District Round Table (Number 415 in Area 19 Devon), is part of the National Association of Round Tables of Great Britain and Ireland (RTBI). Exmouth was awarded its charter and established on the 23rd of April 1954.

The members of Round Table come from all walks of life and join for a variety of reasons - perhaps as a gateway to relaxation and to enjoyment, or as a way of participating in the local community. It is, of course, an ideal way for those who have moved into a new area to find new friends of a similar age. Membership of Round Table helps to create confidence and character. The individual learns quickly to mix and 'have-a-go' at helping to organise and run meetings and events. The organisation is run by and for Tablers' as a hobby.

Started by Louis "Mark" Marchesi in 1927, the movement has expanded to about 1,100 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. It is also established in over 60 countries with around 60,000 members. Forget any pre-conceived ideas you may have about Round Table. It's friendly, fun and rewarding.

What about social events and the family?

Social events and outings are a frequent and popular way of bringing Round Table members and their families together. These are organised at both a local and national level and could be anything from Go-Karting to Ten Pin Bowling, Quasar, Paint Ball, Sailing, Camping, Abseiling, Treasure Hunts, Quiz Nights ..... the list is endless!

Inter-club and regional sporting competitions play an important part in the Round Table calendar, with members taking part in many sports, from 5-a-side and 11-a-side football, squash and tennis to snooker and darts amongst the many competitions available. In the last two years we have both won and hosted the Area indoor sports event.

How does Round Table help in the community?

The main aim of Round Table is Fun and meeting people form all walks of life, however, Round Table is also well known for organising novel fund-raising events which form an important part of its activities.

With an emphasis on local and practical help, service within the community must be fun whether it is playing Father Chrismas, the annual Exmouth Firework Spectacular or perhaps doing a Sponsored Cycle Ride.

Round Table have assisted many National Organisations such as Guide Dogs for the Blind, NSPCC, RNLI and the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Appeal. Over the past years Round Table nationally has donated more than £7,000,000 to the BBC Children in Need appeal alone.

What about the costs and commitment involved?

There is an annual subscription fee but this varies between the clubs and is dependent on their location and activities. All members are required to attend at least 60% of meetings (these are twice a month and will often include a meal and drinks) and to support and participate in as many of the other activities as possible. As with any hobby the more you put in, the more you get out. This is the challenge of Round Table.

What if I move to another part of the country?

This is where being a member of Round Table really pays off. If you move elsewhere there will be a Round Table Club close by. Once a member of Round Table always a member. If you find yourself in an unfamiliar village, town, city or country then there will be a group of friends waiting to welcome you. All you have to do is phone them and say that you've moved in. You then simply transfer from your old Table/Circle to the new one.

How do I become a member?

After attending as a guest for a time, potential members are invited to join. There are no barriers regarding one's political, religious, occupational or marital status and the only qualification is to be male, over 18 and under 45.
